Geek Love…

Posted by: pinkjellybaby on: June 15, 2009

….or help. Actually, it’s more help than love, but I thought I’d butter you all up by saying that I love geeks first. After all, if you have a blog then you must be at least a tiny bit of a geek….Anyway…

PJB Dad works permanent nights. This means that unless it’s a golf day, he’s at home on his own from when he gets up at about lunch time until my Mum gets home at about 4….in the summer, this isn’t too bad but he does get a little bored, bless him. So I’m trying to find him a few new TV shows that he will like watching…which is where you all come in. I have made a little list of TV and Film that he likes/dislikes to help you, help me.

He Likes:
Sopranos (actually, he loves it but as seen it all)
OZ
Ashes to Ashes (although I think that’s just because he likes Alex!)
Spooks
Band of Brothers
The Godfather
Any big epic film like Gladiator with loads of soldiers and fighting

He Does not Like:
24
Heroes
CSI (seen one, seen them all)
Anything too confusing (hence not liking 24 or Heroes)
Anything too slow moving
Anything without a few guns or some drama

House, Bones and Numbers have been suggested via Twitter but I don’t think these would really be his kind of thing…not enough guns and things!

Mad Men is on the list (thanks @natashabailie) as is The Wire….

Can anyone think of anything else?

Star Trek or Doctor Who.

OK, he seems not to like SciFi.

How about 300?

Another vote here for The Wire

Helen I think he has watched it but I’m not sure. I’m going to check on that one because it might be a possible!

HF he’s not much of a Sci-Fi guy.. although I’m thinking he might like a bit of Battlestar Gallactica..

Think he watched 300 and got confused by the computer imagery!

Perp yeah I think he’ll like the Wire…someone also suggested The Shield?

The Wire is actually quite slow moving and confusing, at least to start with.

The Shield is untouchable for me. Seven series, seven different vibes – some stunning story arcs, some lasting a series and some the whole seven – and a small, powerful cast who get real depth. Everyone should watch it.

I was going to suggest The Wire too.

I also have to say: “CSI (seen one, seen them all)” – BLASPHEMY!!!!

The West Wing? I’d suggest The Wire too but as someone said already, it can be epically slow moving and confusing if you’re not completely paying attention.

Yes make him watch BSG!! It’s so much more than Sci-Fi.

Would he be interested in Lost at all? I love it but I know not everyone does.

Prison Break? It went down hill but I remember the first season being decent.

My friend loves The Shield too so that could be a good one (though I’ve never really watched it). Also possible, Deadwood. Though again not seen it myself, I just know people rave about it.

Is he into Sharpe or Hornblower?

OK, I’m done. I think.

Battlestar Galactica? Or Six Feet under if he hasn’t seen it already…

I would have said BSG too, it is far more than sci-fi. Start off with the pilot and mini series and its easy to get it to.

Although its old, he could try Millenium too.

RADoL The Shield is a possible on the list, possibly ahead of The Wire as it’s cheaper at the moment!!

Pawpads someone else suggested that too and a quick look in Wikipedia made me think it would be a bit confusing?

Soupy sorry, never quite got the CSI thing myself!

Carrie West Wing would be a no, as would Lost.

I think I might try him out on BSG season 1 to see what he thinks. I thought Prison Break too but I think getting something that’s only good for a season is a bit of a waste…Deadwood also popped up but there wasn’t too much about it, maybe I should investigate.

Katherine My Mum likes Six Feet Under but I’m not sure my Dad does…

Smidge BSG is going on the list I think, so many people have said it!

Rome! It’s a great show, but only 2 seasons.

Oh, Six Feet Under was fantastic, too!

DSGIK Rome and Tudors have been suggested…they look pretty good!

The Wire is incredibly complex and very slow-moving — but it has guns and drugs. It’s hard going — and you have to focus, or you won’t understand half of the dialogue.

How about the complete back catalogue of X-Files? Deadwood’s quite fun (cowboys), but again it’s slow-moving, lots of dialogue.

A lot of people like ‘Chuck’, for action/adventure TV I think (but I’ve never watched it).

I think most other obvious choices have already been suggested :)

Oooh, if your dad likes OZ he has very good taste. How about ‘Brothers and Sisters’, can be a bit of a snooze fest but it is ok..I second the Dexter suggestion too. How about some comedy like Frasier.

Does anyone else agree that ‘Six feet under’ had the best ever series ending.. I was in tears and still get weepy when i watch in on you tube..

Ah! I do not feel that I can help you because the only shows I watch are Ugly Betty and Grey’s Anatomy. I have seen a gun or two in Desperate Housewives, maybe he might like that.

Even though you have dimissed Bones i think that maybe you should get him to give it a go. Its really good and it had guns and stuff in it. x

Hustle is fabulous and, having caught Chuck last night, I’d second that as a suggestion. Reaper was also great.

Katja He LOVES Hustle! I’m not sure about Chuck from the description of it….we’re going to watch it though!

Fabby I think he might like it but possibly not as much as some of the others…It’s on the Christmas list! :)

Foxy You’ve just named all the shows I love…but um not too sure about PJB Dad!

Sugar I think he likes Dexter but has already watched it…and I’m pretty sure he’d like Six Feet Under once he got into it!

Seb X-Files is a no no but I do think he’d actually like the Wire… although I’m saving that for another time!

Thanks for all of your help… I have chosen Season 1 of The Shield and Mad Men for him to have a watch of…several others on the list for Christmas though!

“Alias”? I LOVED that. And I don’t “do” confusing either so the fact I understood what was going on is a good thing…

yet another vote for the wire

I was going to also say Mad Men and The Wire but since you have those what about The Shield?

Big Love he may or may not like…depends on the man but I have a feeling he won’t like it…

What’s his sense of humor like? Flight of the Conchords??

I also love The Sopranos but since it’s ended there is a hole in my Tony-loving heart.

If you get Showtime or HBO, there are some good new series there. How about Nurse Jackie? Sounds chick-ish but it’s pretty high cursing, cheating, drugging, like Soprano’s.

Good luck finding something!

It’s likely been mentioned already but I recommend the Wire, and Deadwood (another HBO show).
